I'm sure many of us have fallen victim to the so-called prophets or as others like to put it, "men of God". The following should guide you in terms of looking out for the false prophets.
1. A prophet is a person that hears from God and he tells the people what God says. As we all know many so-called prophets claim to hear from God, but listen to what they say. Is it all about your prosperity or solving your problems and not about what you are doing wrong in the eyes of God? Does he come out and tell you to stay away from sin? If he doesn't tell you about your sin the chances are he's not from God. The thing that separates man from God is SIN (Isaiah 59), anyone who is from God will always tell his listeners to stay away from sin because that is what’s in God’s heart.
2. Does the prophet always talk about good life here on earth and not about the after life? If so, he's probably not from God. The Lord wants us to prepare for eternal life in heaven, anyone who ignores that is not from God. Jesus is coming very soon and any prophet that does not warn people of this fact so that they can repent, is not from God.
3. Does the prophet teach about the reality of hell and eternal damnation for unrepentant sinners? If not he's not from God, because hell is real, and unless people repent that is where they'll spend their eternity, in torment that does not end. Jesus taught a lot about hell and anyone from God will teach people about the reality judgement and he'll (Matthew 5:22, 29-30).
4. Does he do signs and wonders? Don't be fooled, the Bible says when Moses performed signs and wonders for Pharaoh, he (Pharaoh) called his magicians and performed signs just like Moses. That's why Jesus said "seek first the kingdom of God and it's righteousness and all the other things will be added". If you seek signs and wonders you will find them, but you'll end up in more trouble than you were in by condemning your soul to hell, but if you follow Jesus you will find Him and the signs and wonders with be added to you.
5. A prophet will ALWAYS preach a message of repentance. If you read the Bible all the prophets spoke about repentance. That is what is in God's heart. Any prophet that lets people wallow in their sins and keeps on feeding them niceties like blessings this and prosperity that and good times and happiness, is NOT from God. A prophet will always call for repentance because if people don't repent they'll end up in eternal damnation and not see God.
6. A prophet that always prays for you but does not teach you how to pray and let you pray for yourself, makes you dependent on him as if the Lord will only work through him, is not from God. Of course we all need to be prayed for at some point or another, but a true prophet with empower you to pray for yourself, because afterall God is not a respector of men, He promised to answer our prayers not just one person. If you find that you need to buy plane tickets to see a prophet so he can pray for you, there's something fundamentally wrong there. And your ability to pray for your self lies on the points 1-5 mentioned above. Of course if you're still living an unrepentant life, doing whatever you want, you'll never get your prayers answered, so you'll always go to the prophet. In fact this practice reminds me of how people of the world when they go to the traditional healers. They don't have to change their lives, they get what they want and go home and carry on with their lives.
The Bible says in 2 Peter 2:1-3 (NKJV) But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
1 John 4:1 (NKJV) Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
The most important thing whether a prophet claims to perform deliverance on you, you must remember that the Bible says
Isaiah 61:1-3 (NKJV) "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,
To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. "
The Lord Jesus came to the world to liberate us from the shackles of sin and all kinds of bondage, but the bold part says so that "they (we) may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord that He may be glorified". When Jesus delivers us from satanic bondage, it is for us to bear fruit for the kingdom of God (as does trees) , so that we can live a righteous life that glorifies God, so that the Lord may be glorified by men through us. Deliverance is not to make you happy while wallowing in your sins. Anyone that tells you God wants to deliver you so that you can be happy is not telling the truth. After deliverance the Lord expects much from you in way of fruits of righteousness.
May the Lord help us open our eyes and ears and not fall into the trap set by the devil, in Jesus name. Amen.
